Refugee emergency -
TAC
(Treatment Action
Campaign)
We are grateful to the
many people who helped with the humanitarian relief effort from 23
May to 2 June. Regrettably, the state is still failing to provide
sufficient relief. We have therefore stepped up our relief efforts
again. TAC continues to need donations for humanitarian relief and
our advocacy efforts against xenophobia. Please donate to TAC or one of these organisations.
Donations can be made
through direct deposit into TAC's bank account by internet or at the
nearest branch of Nedbank.

____________________________________________________________________________ XENOPHOBIA
HELPLINE
Introduction
The
Xenophobia tollfree service is an Automated Attendant that
operates 24 hours a day.
Note that some destinations do not have operators who can
take calls 24 hours a day,
and may have a voicemail service for after hours
operation.
It will enable calls to be distributed
to
multiple destinations based on the input
of the caller. The following helpline services are
linked to this
service:
- Non Governmental
Organizations
- Embassies
- Disaster Management
Centres
- Regional Police
Services
- Regional Home Affairs
Departments
- Counsellors
- United Nations High Commission
for Refugees Offices
- Trade
Unions
Feature
Description
When
the caller dials 08000REFUGEE number, the NIVR announcement with a
recorded greeting answers the call and offers the caller a selection
of options to choose
from.
The
main menu or the main announcement in this service asks the caller
if they want to contact any of the organizations mentioned in the
introduction.
Based on the option selected, the caller will be
routed to a telephone number that is linked to their
option.
In
some instances, an option can lead to another menu with different
options, and finally to the destination number. For example, if they
choose to contact department of Home Affairs, they will be prompted
again as to which regional office they want to
contact.

How you can help victims of xenophobia
27 May 2008, 15:37 GMT + 2
Here is the list of organisations
helping victims of xenophobic violence in South Africa as published
in the Sunday Times on Sunday. We estimate around 60 000 are in
refugee camps in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Cape Town and Durban. Reader
of The Times have been exceedingly generous in their donations to
the Red Cross. It is quite something to see the ROOMS filled with
donated clothes and blankets. Make a difference:

The Gender Equity Unit at the University of
Western Cape is also involved in collecting especially toiletries
(sanitary towels, washing powder, soap, deoderant) for women and
toys and kimbies for toddlers and babies. We have already supplied
some balls and teddy bears but I thought crayons and colouring books
would be great. We assist Pastors Dave and Leanda at the Baptist
church in Bellville. Contact: Mary Hames, Tel: 021 959 2812/3, Fax:
